IT Sligo beat UCD 4-1 tonight at Eamon Deacy Park, Terryland, Galway, to retain the WSCAI Premier Division title. In the first season of the new WSCAI Structure these teams fought their way to the final with a league campaign and then quarter and semi-final wins to play in the Final for the first time.
IT Sligo raced into an early lead when Deirdre Doherty blocked down a clearance from UCD and then beat the UCD fullback with some great skill before firing a superb left footed strike over Roisin Murray into the top corner to put her side ahead after just two minutes.
After 16 minutes it was 2-0. IT Sligo were defending deep in their own half and Doherty picked ball up just outside her own penalty area and went on a run, played a neat one two with Emma Hansberry, running onto a perfectly weighted pass and again finishing to the top corner, this time with her right foot. Doherty, who was capped twice last week for the Senior Ireland Women’s team was certainly impressing watching International Head Coach Sue Ronan.
Two minutes later and with just 18 minutes on the clock it was 3-0 to the rampant Sligo. Geraldine McLoughlin received a pass from Aoife Brennan before taking off on a run at the UCD defenders and with some great footwork, beat three players before finishing to the corner of the net.
Five minutes before the break Sligo made it 4-0, an interception by Kathryn Sullivan was passed to Doherty and her pass sent Aileen Gilroy away who finished to the net with ease, while moments later McLoughlin was denied a fifth after a foul on Murray.
UCD started the second half brighter and were much better organised defensively, keeping IT Sligo to long range efforts, while have a few chances of their own with Senior Women’s International, Ciara Grant, coming more into the game. Their best chance fell to Erin Brown after 56 minutes but her good shot on the turn was superbly held by IT Sligo captain Roisin McCafferty, with McCafferty alert minutes after to avert the danger from another UCD chance.
With an hour gone, UCD got a deserved goal when a pass from Orla Haran found Sophie Pratt in space and her run and strike to the corner gave UCD hope. The game finished 4-1 despite a couple of chances at both ends with IT Sligo deserving their win, the excellence of Doherty and McLoughlin the difference between the sides.
