Reigning champions Japan become first team to progress to Round of 16

The current holders of the FIFA Women’s World Cup have become the first team to progress to the Round of 16 after beating Cameroon 2-1 in their second Group C match.

Nadeshiko Japan has recorded a perfect start to their title defence campaign so far with two wins from two.

Last night, Japan faced an African opponent for the first when they went head to head with Cameroon in Vancouver.

Aye Sameshima opened the scoring after just six minutes! Yuika Sugasawa headed home Aya Miyama’s corner kick to double the Japanese’s lead.

Japan held onto their lead but Cameroon netted a consolation goal in the 90th minute through Nchout.

The win has secured Japan’s place in the Round of 16 with a game to spare in the group stage. Keep up to date with all the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup fixtures and group standings.
