Kenya thrash Zanzibar in CECAFA Women Tournament
Christine Nafula and Corazon Aquino both struck a hat-trick as Harambee Starlets dominated Zanzibar with a 11-0 win in their Cecafa Women tournament final Group A preliminary on Thursday at the technical Centre,Njeru.
Jacky Ogol and Esse Akida grabbed a brace each with Mercy Achieng on target to help the Kenyan side keep an unbeaten record in the tournament.
Harambee Starlets went into this match with confidence after picking two wins in the two matches in the group with head coach David Ouma making massive changes in the squad bringing in shot stopper Samantha Akinyi to replace Vivian Akinyi who has been on duty in the two matches.
Ouma gave Mercy Achieng,Jacky Ogol,Elizabeth Ambogo,Christine Nafula,Corazon Aquino and Terry Ouko their starting berth in the tournament with the regulars Esse Akida,Neddy Atieno,Cheris Avilia,Caroline Onyango,Ann Aluoch,Mary Kinuthia and Ann Aluoch starting from the bench.
Kenya started on a high but their opponents contained them with Mercy Achieng missing a couple of goal scoring opportunities in the first ten minutes of the match.
In the 11th minute, Doreen Nabwire missed a sitter from Elizabeth Ambogo’s cross but Christine Nafula who came in as a substitute in the last two matches opening the scores from a sole effort to post an opener for Kenya.
In the 32nd minute, Nafula slotted home her second of the match to stretch the lead from Ambogo’s cross.
Jacky Ogol made matters 3-0 in the 44th minute to give Kenya a comfortable lead at the breather. On resumption, Achieng who had missed several chances in the first half finally scored to extend the lead in the 48th minute.
Ouma made three substitutions with Mary Kinuthia,Neddy Atieno and Esse Akida coming in for Mercy Achieng Elizabeth Ambogo and Doreen Nabwire respectively.
Nafula completed her hat-trick in the 69th minute before Ogol converting a penalty three minutes later.
Esse Akida added another goal three minutes later with Corazon Aquino scoring a sumptuous goal in the 80th minute. Akida completed a brace in the 84th minute to add salt to already injured Zanzibar side.
Aquino added two more to make matters 11-0 at full time.
