Kerem Demirbay told female official Bibiana Steinhaus ‘women have no place in men’s football’ during a German Bundesliga second division match in which the midfielder was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Demirbay was given a five game ban (two of which are suspended) from DFB, and received was ordered by his club Fortuna Dusseldorf to officiate a girls’ youth match as an additional punishment.

The club’s official Twitter page said (translated by Google ‘…when a young player makes a mistake!’):

Fortuna Dusseldorf’s Kerem Demirbay had to apologise to referee Bibiana Steinhaus for his comments immediately after she sent him off for a second yellow card late in his club’s 2-1 win at FSV Frankfurt last weekend.
