Lieke Martens’s double

Late drama as Netherlands reach last 8

Lieke Martens’s double saw Netherlands squeeze into the World Cup Quarter final including a controversial last gasp penalty.

In the last minute Vivianne Miedema’s powerful shot hit the arm of Saki Kumagai at point-blank range.

The European Champions had taken a 17th minute lead when Marten’s flicked in with the back of her heel via a deflection a stunning piece of skill from the 2016/17 UEFA women’s player of the year.

Japan would equalise however just before the break as Yui Hasegawa finished off a fantastic team move just before the break.

In a frantic second half Japan really put the pressure on the Netherlands and could have been ahead when Iwabuchi found Hina Sugita out wide, she cut inside before seeing her powerful effort rattle the underside of the bar.

Danielle Van De Donk then played in a superb cross for her Gunners teammate Miedema on 77 minutes but her header whistled narrowly over the crossbar.

Then in the final minute drama was to unfold as Miedema saw her shot deflected off Kumagai’s arm. And Martens sent Yamashita the wrong way

The European Champions will now meet Italy in Valenciennes on Saturday.
