Swedish defender/midfielder Lotta Ökvist joins NWSL club Boston Breakers
The Boston Breakers announced today that they have signed Swedish defender/midfielder Lotta Ökvist for the 2018 season, pending receipt of her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Lotta is a very technically gifted player with a wonderful left foot,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “She is a versatile player, who plays in defense and attack and will be a great addition to our roster.”
The 20-year-old Piteå, Sweden native most recently played for Piteå IF in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan, appearing in 25 games during the 2016/2017 season. Ökvist played part of 2016 with Umea (11 games), and from 2009-2015, played in 27 games for Piteå.
“I’m really excited to play in the NWSL, and I’m thankful I got the opportunity to play with the Boston Breakers,” Ökvist said. “I have a really good impression of the club, from the coach to the medical staff, the team, the whole organization, everyone seems really professional. I am a team player and a fighter. I love to win, so I will always give 100 percent for my team. I hope the fans come out and support us next season and help us reach our goal of making the playoffs.” says Lotta Ökvist.
“We finalized everything with Boston for about one month ago, and even thou Lotta had some very interesting offers from both Sweden and Germany, she really wanted to go to Boston Breakers and the NWSL that is one of the most competitive leagues in the world” Says Lottas agent.
A member of Sweden’s U-19 and U-17 women’s national teams, Ökvist debuted for the U-17s on Aug. 2, 2013, a 3-0 win vs. Portugal. She played in the UEFA U-17 and U-19 Women’s Championships, helping Sweden to the U-19 UEFA title in 2015/2016.
