Philippine WNT

This year the Philippine Women’s National Football Team were reinforced by the injection of American influenced talent: Filipinas who moved to or were born in the US/Canada and learned the sport there.

Most of these ladies are and were active in the NCAA circuit, with some playing in pro/semi-pro clubs after graduating.

Philippine

The Malditas participated in three tournaments this year: AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in May, ASEAN Football Federation’s Women’s Championship in September, and finally the Southeast Asian Games this past December. The team never managed to progress to the next stage in any of those events. The closest they came to was in the Asian Cup Qualifiers where they missed out a chance on competing against Asia’s best and ultimately a shot at the 2015 World Cup when they harrowingly conceded a single goal to Thailand.

Philippine

Joana Houplin has been the most prolific scorer with 9 goals in 8 appearances. Remarkable to note that she only started playing for the PWNT this year. She made two hat-tricks during the ASEAN Championships in Myanmar with an extra goal in the second one. Midfielder Marisa Park is second in total goals with 3, and striker Jesse Shugg, bruiser Heather Cooke at the wings are next with 2 apiece.

Filipino-Korean-American Marisa Park has proven herself to be a valuable asset to the squad with her playmaking ability despite fierce opposition, finding ways to create options for her teammates. She is the assist leader on this team for this year, responsible for a lot of the goals the team has scored in several games. Wearing #8, I can’t help calling her the Filipina Aya Miyama.

Philippine

Cat Barnekow, one of the steadier defenders on the team, was touted as the player of the match in the new look Malditas’ first ever game when they took on Iran in the Asian Cup Qualifiers. That game shell-shocked the confident Iranians and surprised all the teams in the tournament as well as the press. A few days later she chipped in a goal for the Philippines against Bangladesh.

Philippine

Maria Dela Cruz had a coming out party of sorts as a top class goalkeeper in the Myanmar game during the SEA Games. She managed to parry, block and punch shots that should have been goals by Myanmar. If it weren’t for her, the score would have been lopsided in that game attended by some 20,000 strong very hostile and intimidating Burmese. Fans back at home have even started calling her “Santa Maria” (Saint Maria).
Philippine Patricia Dull, one of the senior team’s youngest and tallest at 16 years of age, earned her first cap for the Philippines against the best team in Asia and arguably the world: Japan. She managed to keep the scoreline against such a superior team close by conceding only 4 goals.

 Philippine

This year the team were led by three different players on the field: long time vet Marielle Benitez, solid scoring centerback Patrice Impelido (she was the lone scorer in the game won by the Japan U23, the moment captured below) and veteran midfielder Samantha Nierras took turns wearing the captain’s armband.
Philippine

The team utilized unorthodox formations with a 3-man backline most of the time.
