Manchester City earn 2-0 win against Birmingham City to send them back to the top of WSL
A superb display from Nikita Parris ensured Manchester City reacted in the perfect way to their disappointing SSE FA Cup semi-final defeat with a 2-0 win in the FA WSL over bottom club Birmingham City on Sunday.
Parris was involved in both City’s goals and kept the Birmingham defence busy all afternoon.
At times, hapless Birmingham did not have an answer to City’s free-flowing football as they weaved intricate patterns with their passing right across the pitch.
And it was a neat move from right to left that resulted in City’s first goal. Good work by Bronze and Corboz set Stokes free down the left. Then a clever back heal from Scott set up Parris whose shot struck the post and from the rebound Corboz side-footed the ball into the bottom corner of the net with slide-rule precision from 12 meters.
Birmingham’s response was let down by poor finishing and Wellings should have done better after a long ball was misjudged by McManus and Bronze, but she could only put the ball wide of the goal.
The tenacious Corboz again stood out with excellent link-up play in midfield. And it was her pass that found Parris out on the right, who with practically the last move of the game, again showed great skill to get round Harrop before sending over an inch-perfect cross for Jane Ross to head home City’s second goal with only seconds remaining.
This result sent City back to the top of the WSL, but that could all change as there is still a busy week of football ahead in the FA WSL.
