Marta scores only goal in Brazil win

Marta scores the only goal of the game as Brazil overcame Italy 1-0 in Valenciennes.

The Brazil legend converted a second half penalty after Debinha was sent crashing to the floor.

This allowed Marta to step up and convert scoring her 17th World Cup goal in the process.

The Italians however were probably the better side always a constant threat on the counter with Barbara Bonansea of Juventus being denied twice by two good saves from Barbara in the Brazil goal.

However they did have the ball in the net on 29 minutes as Christiana Girelli also of Italian Champions Juventus took a fantastic touch in the box before firing her effort into the net only for the offside flag to cut the celebrations short.

Italy goalkeeper Laura Giuliani had earlier made a super save from point black range to stop Debinha putting the Samba girls ahead as she tipped over a superb flick from the Brazilian at the near post.

However on 52 minutes Giuliani was beaten all ends up as Andressinha’s superb second half free-kick crashed off the crossbar.

The game then faded until Brazil were awarded the penalty as Elena Linari took out Debinha as she look to have a strike with her left foot allowing Marta to slot the ball into the net sending Giuliani the wrong way in the process.

The South Americans are now set to play host nation France in the La Havre on Sunday unless a set of freakish results set up a tie with Germany whereas Italy will meet either China or Nigeria.
