Match report: Linfield Crowned League Cup Champions
Linfield were crowned Women’s premiership league cup champions as a Thunder storm hit Solitude on Wednesday night.
Newry created the first chance inside the opening minute as Celine Curtis hit a low effort just wide of Lauren Perry’s right-hand post.
Linfield took the lead inside six minutes as Kirsty McGuiness hit a low freekick from a central position as she lashed it through a crowd of players beating Dheboara Barbosa.
McGuiness grabbed her second on eight minutes as she cut inside to fire the ball into the top corner of Barbosa’s net.
Newry pulled a goal back however through Brazilian born Rayza De Souza as she hit a powerful drive from twenty-five yards out low into the bottom corner of the net leaving Perry with no chance of saving.
In what was a frantic start Newry levelled the tie on 13 minutes as she hit a half volley into the net from just inside the box after the Blues failed to clear their lines.
In a superb end to end game Linfield should have gone ahead as Leonita McVarnock was played through by Megan Bell her shot sailed wide of goal from point blank range.
Linfield however did go ahead as Amber Dempster was played in by McGuiness and she hit a low powerful strike across the Newry keeper into the net.
It was David Welshmen’s side who started the second half better and they should have gone further ahead when Dempster linked up with Bell before her shot just went wide of goal.
It was 4-2 on 71 minutes as McGuiness completed her hat-trick as her shot slipped through the grasp of Barbosa before sailing into the net.
Four was to become five on 75 minutes as substitute Alison Smyth latched onto the end of a corner from the right and she headed the ball into the top corner.
Dempster added a sixth on 86 minutes as she combined well with Kelsie Burrows before the ball found her at the back post and she planted the ball into the net to surely seal the League Cup for the Blues.
The goal scoring was complete in the 90th minute as Newry captain Grace Murray hit a fantastic free-kick from thirty yards out into the net past the despairing dive of Perry.
