Seattle Reign FC Forward Megan Rapinoe Voted NWSL Player of the Month
Seattle Reign FC forward Megan Rapinoe was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month for the month of July of the 2017 NWSL season.
Rapinoe, 32, scored five goals in four games during the month to lead the Reign to a 2-1-1 record as Seattle maintained their charge to return to the NWSL Playoffs after missing out on the postseason last year.
The Redding, Calif. native opened the month by scoring both goals for Seattle in a 2-0 victory over the Portland Thorns on July 1 as she scored in the 45th and 81st minutes. She then closed July with her fourth multi-goal game of the year and the 12th hat trick in NWSL history to lead the Reign to a 5-4 win against Sky Blue on July 22. In the process, Rapinoe became the oldest player to score three goals in an NWSL game as well as the second player – along with Nadia Nadim – to record a hat trick twice during her career in the league.
The U.S. international now leads the league with 12 goals on the year – blowing away her previous season-high of five goals in both 2013 and 2015. She is just three tallies away from equaling the number of goals from her previous four seasons combined as she began the 2017 campaign with 15 in goals in 36 games in the NWSL from 2013-2016.
The University of Portland product is also five goals away from breaking the NWSL single-season scoring record of 16 goals set by former Reign midfielder Kim Little with nine games remaining in the regular season. Regardless of whether she is able to set a new single-season mark, Rapinoe has already become the fifth player in NWSL history to score at least 12 goals in season – joining Little (16 goals in 2014), Crystal Dunn (15 goals in 2015), Amy Rodriguez (13 goals in 2014) and Lauren Holiday (12 goals in 2012).
Rapinoe is just three goals shy of becoming the sixth NWSL player to reach the 30-goal milestone for her career. She also finished July with the third best minutes-per-goal rate in league history (among players with at least 1,500 minutes) with a goal every 146 minutes during her career – behind only Rodriguez (141 minutes per goal) and Christen Press (144 minutes per goal).
It is the first time Rapinoe has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Month and the fifth time a Seattle Reign FC player has won the award. She is the first member of the Reign to earn the accolade other than former midfielder Kim Little, who accomplished the feat on four occasions (April 2014, May 2014, July 2014, June 2015).
The Seattle Reign FC will return to action on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET against the North Carolina Courage at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
