Mick Mulhern steps down as Sunderland Ladies manager

Sunderland AFC Ladies manager Mick Mulhern has stepped down from his role at the club after helping the team secure promotion to the FA Women’s Super League 1.

Mulhern has helped to guide the side to seven league titles and one league cup trophy during his time with the women’s team.

He leaves the club after the Lady Black Cats secured a final day Championship win over Millwall Lionesses last month. Following promotion to the top tier of women’s football, Mulhern is unable to commit to the full-time coaching role that the team’s top flight status requires, due to his current job.

Speaking about his time with the club, Mulhern said: “I’m extremely proud to have helped guide the club to FA WSL 1. To achieve their potential at the top level, a full time management role is required, which unfortunately I am unable to commit to.

“I’ve had a fantastic time with the club, achieving silverware, whilst working with some incredibly talented players and coaches throughout the years. I wish everybody involved with the club all the best for next season and the future.”

Sunderland AFC chief executive Margaret Byrne placed on record the club’s thanks to Mulhern, adding: “Through Mick’s involvement, the ladies’ team stands in good stead for the future and everyone is now looking forward to building on last season’s success. Mick leaves with our very best wishes and we would like to thank him for his achievements.”
