Kenya Women's Premier Football League

Mumias Town kicks off second leg of Kenyan Women’s Premier League

Most teams were headed to Mumias in Western Kenya in October after the mid season with renewed vigour.

It was an exciting kick off to the fifth round of the Kenyan’s Women premier League that was curtain raised lead table team Oserian who beat Eldoret Falcon by nine goals to one. Dorcas Shikobe and Josephine Naswa are in contention for top scorer netted four goals of the nine. Eldoret Falcons seemed to be still struggling against relegation as they lost again later in the weekend against Spedag FC by seven goals. Spedag FC and Thika Queens put up fierce battles against their opponents as they competed for the second place in the table by winning or getting a draw in all their fixtures. Thika Queens were able to contain the League leaders Oserian Ladies with a two all draw but overpowered Lake Hawks by eight goals. Lake Hawks who were having a miserable weekend, lost to Spedag FC by five gaols and to Soccer queens by three goals. Soccer Sisters got a one all draw against Kisumu Leeds and earned three important points against Wadadia with two important goals.

Some teams could not make the 8 hour trip to Mumias from the Nairobi due to insufficient funds. These teams had enough funds to see them through the first leg of the league and have not been able to secure funds for the second half. Funding of Women Football has been the biggest challenge in the country with individual supporters stepping in to try and sponsor their home teams. The players hope to overcome this challenge by improving their skills individually, since team practice is not regular and trying to get football fans interested in the game.
