First and Reserve Teams at Home in Cup & League Action
NUWFC First team in the FA Womens League Cup and the Reserves in the FA Women’s Premier League
NUWFC First Team
Newcastle United Women’s Football Club welcomes Nottingham Forest Ladies Football Club to Northumbria University Coach Lane on Sunday in the FA Women’s League Cup. This is the second time these two teams have met this season; the first was in August when the teams kicked off the season in the FA Women’s Premier League. A terrific game of football from both sides but NUWFC return to Tyneside with all three points.
NUWFC First Team Manager Michael Havelock said “NUWFC have a very tough game coming up against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup. Forest will be out for revenge after an opening day defeat to Newcastle at their place. The players are looking forward to the game and believe that we can progress from our group in this cup if we stick to our football and believe in ourselves. We know that Forest have good players and we have felt the strength of their fire power already this season. After two long away trips, the team are revelling in the chance to play in front of their home fans.”
With a full fit squad to choose from Michael will be able to field a strong team against Forest. Both the First Team management and the players will be looking forward to a game of football without the long journey. The last two weeks has seen them travel over 800 miles to two away games, which included very early departures and very late returns to the North East. The players will be looking forward to an extra few hours in bed this Sunday and also looking forward to playing in front of their supporters, who are growing in numbers every week.
NUWFC First Team Captain Sarah Wilson said ‘This week we have a break from the league taking on a very strong Nottingham Forest side in the League Cup. Again like everyone else in this division they are experienced. They will also be out seeking revenge as we took all three points last time we met. Like every other game we must prepare well this week at training to ensure we are in the right frame of mind for Sunday’.

NUWFC Reserve Team
The NUWFC Reserve Team welcomes Stoke City to Northumbria University Bullocksteads Sports Centre on Sunday. Stoke are currently sitting sixth in the league having drawn two of their three games so far this season. NUWFC Reserves go into this game following an defeat at Lincoln last week but the team are confident and are looking forward to getting back on the pitch and show their loyal supporters that last week ‘bad day at the officer’ is a one off.
NUWFC Reserve Team Captain Amy Perch said ‘This Sunday we take on Stoke, a team who performed very similarly to us in the league last season. We will be working extremely hard in training this week to overcome the demons which dominated our game at Lincoln. We have learnt from that and will come back this week channeling our frustration to make us into a much stronger and more determined side.’
As with the First Team Manager, the Reserve Team Manager Gary Appleton has a full squad to choose from so will be looking to field the strongest squad possible to ensure the three points available on Sunday stay on Tyneside.
Reserve Team Manager Gary Appleton said “NUWFC After last weeks defeat from the a impressive Lincoln side we cannot wait to get back onto pitch against Stoke City at home this weekend to try and bounce back with a more positive and attacking approach to the game. Again as every week because of the large squad sizes all the players will be looking to do the best in training and try to force there way into the squad to be in a position for selection in the team. A couple of the players picked up few injuries and we will wait to assess them before making our team selection “
