NUWFC First and Reserve Teams in SAGICOR NFA Women’s Cup

Newcastle United Women’s First and Reserve Teams are in action this weekend in the Semi Finals of the NFA Sagicor Women’s Cup.

The NUWFC First Team welcome current holders Whitley Bay FC Women at Northumbria University Coach Lane and the NUWFC Reserve Team welcomes Newcastle University Women’s FC First to Newcastle Pin Point FC, at Cowgate Sports Centre.

This is the first time in many years that the NUWFC First team has been able to enter the NFA Sagicor Women’s Cup and they are really enjoying it. It has given the players the chance to play local teams, meet up with old friends and enjoy the competitiveness and passion that a local cup run brings.

NUWFC First Team Manager Michael Havelock said ‘”Newcastle are relishing the chance to play in this cup semi final. It gives us the chance to play football, which has been few and far between recently! The girls are focused and itching to get going. Our sole focus is on this game and progressing to the final. If we can keep to our high standards and play our brand of football, we will have a great chance of getting there. This is the crunch part of the season and all games are big games. This is the reason that we play football”

NUWFC First Team are currently sitting top of the Northern Combination league but still have to play both Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City, who are sitting comfortably in second and third place, before the end of the season. NUWFC First Team Coach Warren Teasdale is pleased with the way the whole squad have committed themselves this season and is confident that if the players continue their hard work they will remain in that top position and also have a cup final to look forward to.

NUWFC First Team Coach Warren Teasdale said “I am really looking forward to Sunday’s game against Whitley Bay in the County Cup. I enjoyed six wonderful seasons at Whitley as a player during the late eighties /early nineties and still consider them as ‘my club’. Whitley’s current ladies team has a couple of players, one who I have coached and the other who coached alongside me at Walbottle Girls F.C. I am looking forward to seeing them and their families on the day. It will also be great to see Walbottle Girls F.C junior section as mascots at the game. I formed the club in 2007 following the collapse of the then Newcastle United Girls section. Some of the players still in the junior section having played and developed at the club since then. Despite my past allegiance to Whitley Bay, I am still more than confident of a Newcastle United WFC win on what i am sure will be a very close and difficult game.”

Sunday is also Mothers Day and NUWFC are asking that all Mums come along and enjoy the day and if past meeting between these two teams are anything to go by will be guaranteed really great game of football. All mums attending will be entered into the Mothers Day Raffle.

First Team Captain Sarah Wilson is really looking forward to Sunday’s game and like many other NUWFC club members would like to see both NUWFC teams in the County Cup Final. Sarah said” Sunday’s game will be a very tough test. We have a young squad, Whitley Bay are strong and experienced. It’s vital that we go out fighting; we’re expecting them to come at us hard. We’ve had a few Sundays without any games but we have been training as hard as ever. We have a lot of very important fixtures coming up, Sunday is only the beginning!

NUWFC Reserve Team

Newcastle United Women’s Football Clubs Reserve Team are old hands at the NFA Cup and are looking forward to Sundays Semi Final. The Reserve team has spent most of their Sunday’s recently traveling long distances to play in the FA Women’s Premier League and welcome a home tie. The Reserve team are a young team and have spent this season building on what is now a strong and tight squad. Their last few games against top of the league teams have shown how much they have progressed over the last few months and proved to them what hard work and commitment can do for a team.

Reserve Team Manager Gary Appleton said “This week see Newcastle Reserves taking a welcome break from our hectic league programme to play our most important game of the season so far and after a couple of disappointing results of late even though the performances were good the team is determined to go one step further in this competition and seal a second successive county cup final appearance but to achieve this we need to overcome a very good Newcastle University team who are coached by our very own First Team Coach Michael Havelock so we know we need to prepare right and be at our best to progress into the final .We have a couple of players who picked up slight knocks over the weekend but Adam and myself are quite confident we will be able to choose from a full squad all the players will be hoping to be selected for a game being billed as a Tyne v Tyne derby

Like the First Team the Reserve Team will also be having a Mothers Day Raffle on Sunday, this is NUWFC way of saying thank you to all of our mums for their continued support

Reserve Team Captain Amy Perch Said “This week has been a difficult one for is, it hasn’t been easy to pick ourselves up from two heavy defeats. I’m quick to add that neither of the last two score lines were totally reflective of the games and we have, at times, played some really good stuff. That behind, we now look forward to this Sundays County Cup Semi Final. Not only is this one of the biggest games of our season, there is the added incentive of a mouthwatering final against the first team. We will train hard as a squad on Thursday to work on some of our weakness which were highlighted last week and we will do our best to guarantee that the County Cup is returned to NUWFC, where it belongs”
