First Team in FA Cup Action at Bradford and the Reserve travel to Sheffield in the League

Newcastle United Women’s Football Club travel to Bradford in the FA Women’s Cup First Round Proper on Sunday. Although the team are focused on the League at the moment, the FA Cup comes as a welcome break for the players. The magic of the FA Cup is the same for all footballers regardless of what league or position in the league they are. The team are keen to progress but know Bradford will do what they have to stop them.

First Team Captain Sarah Wilson said ‘This Sunday could sort of be seen as a well deserved break from the league. Even though getting to play in the FA Cup is brilliant, our main focus is the league. Sunday’s game was tough, both teams battled very hard and we were lucky to come out with all three points. Bradford are sitting just behind us in the table, we know that they are a strong side so they will be hard to break down. We have a tough week at training to get through before heading into the game, but I am confident with a lot of hard work that we can come out on top’.

The last time the two teams met it was way back in August in the League and Bradford took all three points away with them. Bradford are currently sitting third in the league with quite an appetite for scoring goals. The NUWFC defence will have to make sure they are in top form to keep the Bradford strikers at bay on Sunday. NUWFC Stacy Crooks has found herself a new hobby over the last few weeks; scoring goals and her team mates will be hoping she can add a few Cup goals to her tally.

NUWFC First Team manager Michael Havelock said ‘”The FA Cup is a massive competition and one that we want to do well in. Drawing Bradford was especially sweet as it provides us with a good test against a team that we feel we owe. The management team are looking forward to this game and we know that all the players will prepare better for this game than they did for last Sunday’s lucky league win. A good performance is the minimum that we expect this weekend, hopefully this will mean progression into the next round.”

NUWFC Reserve Team

The Reserve Team Travel to Sheffield FC Ladies Reserves on Sunday in the FA Women’s Premier League Reserves Mid / North Division Two.

Reserve Team Manager Garry Appleton said ‘After the disappointment of having to cancel our fixture last Sunday due to injuries and illness, the girls will be looking forward to another away game to Sheffield Ladies and will start preparing for the game on Tuesday and again in Thursdays training sessions. Hopefully all the squad will be fit for selection. The players and coaches are looking forward to the trip with everyone focused on a good performance and hopefully bringing back with us 3 points.

Sheffield are currently sitting second in the league having won six out of their ten games this season, so the NUWFC Reserves know they will need to work really hard against a team in such good form.. Although they did not have a game on Sunday the team have been working hard in training and new Reserve Team Manager Gary Appleton is pleased with the commitment his team are showing.

Reserve team Captain Amy Perch said ‘With the game against Leicester City being postponed at such late notice, the team were left bitterly disappointed. We were geared up to go in all guns blazing following on from last week’s excellent second half comeback. That said, we will work hard this week in training to channel our disappointment in the right way and I’m more than confident that we can bring 3 points back from Sheffield. They will certainly have a game on their hands if we put in anything like the performance we did against Stoke.’

Venue: Sheffield United FC Academy, Firshill Crescent, Shirecliffe, Sheffield, S4 7DR
