Toon Army ‘cross the border’ for Pre Season Friendlies
On Saturday 14th July Newcastle United Women’s Football Club will travel to Edinburgh to begin their preparations for the 2012 -2013 season.
Following a fantastic 2011 – 2012 season Newcastle are determined to make sure that their preparations for their return to the FA Women’s Premier League are as they should be for the standard of football they expect to be playing. NUWFC will play two top Scotish teams who play in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.
Newcastle will travel without their First Team Captain Sarah Wilson who is currently spending the summer break playing football in Iceland. A number of other squad members are also unavailable due to work commitments and holidays. Several of NUWFC Pre Season signings will be travelling to Scotland giving them a chance to get to know their new team mates.
The first stop on this pre season weekend will be on Saturday 14th July at the home of Spartans F C Women’s in Edinburgh.
The women’s section at Spartans was established in 2008 as a result of Premier League side Edinburgh Ladies FC and Scottish League side Royal High Thistle amalgamating to become The Spartans, providing a future link for the Spartans youth girl sections and offer the youth players a pathway into the women’s game and continue playing football in the North of Edinburgh. Edinburgh Ladies, who had previously been named Whitehill Welfare and were formed in 2004, had been in existence for two years winning the Scottish Premier League Cup in 2006/2007 season and finishing third in the league in 2006 and fourth in 2007.
Since being a part of the Spartans family the team have established themselves as one of the title contender’s year on year, finishing second on two occasions including last season and third in 2009 and 2010 as well as reaching the league cup final for the last three years.
Last season the team finished second in the Scottish Women’s Premier League and are currently sitting in fifth position. The Spartans are a big club with a motto of ‘Live Together, Play Together, Win Together. Their Premier Team, B Team and Youth teams, Under 11’s, Under 13’s and U15’s all train at the Spartans Academy.
Newcastle United Women’s Football Club’s First and Reserve teams are looking forward to their visit and meeting the players for what will be a great afternoon of football.
Looking ahead to the friendly Spartans FC Head Coach Debbi McCulloch said: “This game will help us focus on our shape and our style of play against a team that we don’t know much about. This game will be a fantastic challenge playing against top opposition and we won’t take anything for granted in the game. I think both teams will enjoy the occasion and this will be a great opportunity to test ourselves for the weeks ahead. As a club it is a great experience to have both our first team and our reserves playing against Newcastle at the same time. ”

Sunday 15th July will see Newcastle United Women’s Football Club visit Hutchison Vale Community Sports Club in Edinburgh when both Newcastle United Women’s Football Clubs First and Reserve teams will take to the pitch again for the second of their planned pre season friendly games. The teams will take part in a training session at the ground with members of the Hutchinson Vale Community Sports Club prior to the games.
Hutchison Vale was formed in the Hutchison area of Edinburgh in 1940 and was a one team outfit playing in the under 21′s Juvenile League. During those years the club has had its ups and downs but the strength of the people running the club has seen it grow into the great club it is today. The Club has football for all ages, male and female, starting with their First Touch and Petite Football to Open Age. The club also have an ever growing women’s/girls section, with now 4 girls teams, Under 11’s, Under 13’s Under, Under 15’s, Under 17’s and a women’s team all playing in the various Scottish Leagues.
NUWFC Players and Coaches are looking forward to meeting the players and supporters of Hutchinson Vale.
Hitchison Vale Team Manager Ian McDonald said ‘We are delighted to welcome Newcastle United to Edinburgh for this day of games with Hutchison Vale. This will be a great challenge for our ladies and one which we are looking forward to greatly and is testament to how far we have come in the last 2 – 3 years to be playing against such great opposition. There is no doubting that this will be a great step up in opposition for us but one which we look forward to and testing ourselves against
Newcastle won the Northern Combination League title last year securing promotion to the FA Women’s Premier League which highlights what a massive test this will be for us. To be playing in the top level in England is a massive achievement and one which Newcastle will be looking forward to and our friendly will be a stepping stone for them to be ready for the start of their season in August. Their reserve team was also successful last season so it will be 2 huge tests for our ladies.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to them and hope their weekend north of the border is an enjoyable one and one which will hopefully lead to more return fixtures in the future’

NUWFC First Team Manager Michael Havelock said “NUWFC are looking forward to the trip up North, we believe it will be a tough test for the girls and a vital part of our pre season program. After a very successful season that saw us unbeaten in the last 20 league games, the team are hoping to carry this success into the new season in the northern premier league. In order to do this we must prepare properly and professionally. A stern test awaits at Hutchison Vale, where we must be ready to push ourselves to the maximum if we are to gain anything from the game.”
NUWFC Reserve Team Manager: Gary Appleton said “After a six week break preparations for the new season are already underway. Our pre-season preparations could not start any harder because this year the club has decided to go North of the Border for a Scottish Pre-Season Tour. We have arranged to play two games against two teams from the Scottish F.A. Premier League.
We travel early morning on Saturday July 14th to prepare for a 1pm kick-off against Spartan Ladies F.C. who are having a very successful campaign and are currently 4th in the league. With the Scottish Premier League not finished until the middle of July we are expecting a very hard game as Spartans will be in peak condition. With only 3 weeks pre-season training behind we still expect a good solid determined Newcastle Reserve side to be up for the challenge. After an over night stay and a hearty breakfast we will be back on our travels for a second trip to Edinburgh to play Hutchison Vale Ladies F.C with the Reserve Team playing there fixture at 1pm followed by a 3pm k/off for the First Team. Again both teams and coaches are expecting hard, physical games against teams at there fittest with both teams having very good seasons. This will be a great test for all our girls to shake off the early season cobwebs.
I would like to thank Andy from Hutchison Vale Ladies and also Alex from Spartan Ladies F.C. who between them have made an enormous effort in helping us to get the pre-season tour arranged. Thanks also go to the Newcastle United Women’s F.C Committee for organising the travel and hotel accommodation
