Lisa-Marie Woods

has sustained a hip injury and will not participate in this summer’s World Cup. Woods had a lesion in the left hip region during Sunday’s training, and she was then taken out of further training. She has recovered a bit, but not enough to take her place in the team. This is a shame, both Lisa and for the national team. Coach Eli Landsem has picked Kristine Wigdahl Hegland for the Lisa’s replacement player.

I’m surprised that nobody here speaks about the match. Hasn’t anybody seen it ? I did. A good match with a lot of physical engagement, a very high pace and much of uncertainty as the result was concerned. But also numerous bad passes and loss of control.

All in all, Germany displayed a better play than Usa in my opinion. An excellent mixture of physical (the defenders and some players like Laudehr, Berhinger and Mittag in some way) and high technicity (Marozsan, Bresonik, Kulig). A very collective play too. They missed at least three huge opportunities and should have won the match. The defense was poor at the beginning (big mistake by Schmidt and Bartusiak on the Us’s goal) but better in second half with a good Bartusiak then. I was fearing about Angerer but I was wrong since she was very good… Bresonik had to go out, injured to an ankle. She had been good so far, thanks to her technique, clairvoyance, cleverness. Kulig made a very good entrance in second half. Anja Mittag scored a beautiful goal, superb ! The gem of the match was Marozsan. Very, very impressive, bonifying every action thanks to her technique, composure and cleverness. She has everything to become one of the best – if not the best – players in the world in the coming years.

On US side, no real surprise. We saw the team playing as usual with a strong will to go forward. But the opponent was very hard to swallow. So, the team became more aggressive and physical in the last 25 minutes. Some players were less effective and good as usual, as Rapinoe, Lloyd (in second half), Wambach and even Morgan in spite of her decisive action and pass on Wambach’s goal at the very beginning. I was happy to see Cheney starting the match but she was so-so.

One can think that with da MBabi (injured) and Bajramaj, Germany would have won easily. The second match will be interesting to watch.
