NWPL Week 8 Preview: League returns with a grudge match between Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels
The Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) returns with a grudge match between Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels, which is a hotly-anticipated week eight clash on Wednesday.
The rivals are expected to draw a good crowd at the Nembe City Stadium for an encounter that has caught the imagination in the South-South.
The Jewel of Rivers were 2-1 better than Restoration Girls when they met in the first stanza at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium. A brace from Alice Ogebe rendered Yetunde Adeboyejo’s leveller as a consolation.
Rivers Angels gaffer Edwin Edem Okon knows that the reigning NWPL champions will have to produce a special performance in order to maintain their position at the top of the Group A table.
“The spirit in the camp is really good. We are in a rich vein of form at the moment and have not lost a game this season,” Okon told Women Soccer United.
“We are confident of performing well and playing as well as we can but we have to go there and play out of our skins, while they need to have an off-day. My girls won’t disappoint.”
Bayelsa Queens central defender Udegbe Esther has also talked up the importance of the fixture, with her team having secured three wins this season.
“It is a huge game and I am very much looking forward to it and my teammates are positive and bright,” said Udegbe.
“We know what it takes to play in this kind of game and won’t disappoint. It’s a difficult test anyway for the club and a big game for all. But we are strong enough to grab three points.
Ibom Angels will be travelling to Heartland Queens, while FC Robo Queens will attempt to spring a major surprise against Sunshine Queens at the Akure Township Stadium.
In Group B, Nasarawa Amazons make the trip to Delta Queens in a match that promises to be tantalising, Confluence Queens head to Adamawa Queens and Osun Babes welcome Saadatu Amazon.
Meanwhile, fans at the UJ Esuene Stadium won’t want to miss the thriller between Pelican Stars and Edo Queens. The reserve fixture ended 2-2 in Benin City.
