Perfect Canada wins Olympic Group F with 2:1 win over Germany

Canada are perfect with nine points following a 2:1 win over Germany at the Rio 2016 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Melissa Tancredi scored both Canada goals as the 9 August win clinched first place in Group F.

As winners of Group F, Canada will return to São Paulo to face France in the Rio 2016 Olympic Quarterfinals on Friday 12 August at 19.00 local. The two sides, of course, were opponents at the London 2012 Olympic Games when Canada won bronze with a 1:0 win on a last-minute Diana Matheson goal. The Rio 2016 Quarterfinals will be broadcast live in Canada at 18.00 ET / 15.00 PT (details to be published at olympics.cbc.ca/schedules).

“I am just proud of this team,” said Melissa Tancredi, Canada’s captain and two-goal hero. “To be able to put two goals past a tier-one opponent and really state our spot in this tournament is really huge for us.”

Tancredi, wearing the captain’s armband, scored on both sides of the half-time whistle.

Down 0-1 after a Melanie Behringer penalty, Tancredi equalised in the 26th minute on a left-footed strike at the top of the box. She then put Canada up 2-1 with a header off a long free kick from Rebecca Quinn in the 60th minute.

“She spoke before the game,” said Head Coach John Herdman of Tancredi’s inspirational performance. “She got them clear on what this game was about (as) it was about making history in a couple of ways: beating Germany for the first time and finishing top of the group with nine points.”

Canada held on for the victory, their first-ever result against European champions Germany. Final group standings featured Canada in first place (nine points), Germany in second place (four points, +4 goals difference), Australia in third place (four points, +3 goals difference), and Zimbabwe in last place (no points).

Through three group matches, coach John Herdman ensured that all 18 players featured and that all 18 players rested. Before Tuesday, Canada won the opening match 2:0 over Australia and the second match 3:1 over Zimbabwe. Before Tancredi’s brace, Canada’s goals were scored by Janine Beckie (three) and Christine Sinclair (two), both of whom rested in the third group match.

By winning Group F, this marks the second consecutive major tournament in which Canada have finished first in group play. At the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015, Canada won their group and finished sixth overall in front of record-setting crowds on home soil. At Rio 2016, Canada won their group again, this time finishing perfect with nine points for the first time in their history.
