Nadia Nadim 26′ (Portland Thorns)
Portland Thorns FC jumped to the top of the National Women’s Soccer League table with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Red Stars Wednesday night at Providence Park in front of 16,931 fans. The victory extended their unbeaten streak to a club-best 10 games.
Christine Sinclair opened the scoring in the sixth minute for Portland when she tenaciously pressured the Chicago backline. Forcing a turnover, Sinclair pounced on the loose ball and fired it past Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher for a 1-0 lead. It was Sinclair’s third goal of the season and her third in the last three games.
Midfielder Amandine Henry, making her home debut for the Thorns, earned her first career NWSL assist on Nadia Nadim’s goal in the 25th minute. Midfielder Tobin Heath curled in a corner kick that Henry snapped on frame with a header. The ball went off of Nadim’s head and in as Portland doubled their lead.
Portland’s defence took it from there as they methodically shut down the Chicago attack in the second half. Goalkeeper Michelle Betos was credited with her second shutout of 2016.
