Portland Thorns FC forward Christine Sinclair has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 15 of the 2014 NWSL season.
Sinclair, 31, scored three goals to lead the Thorns to a 6-3 victory Sunday over the Boston Breakers at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. The University of Portland graduate also featured in Portland’s 1-1 draw Thursday with the Chicago Red Stars and had one shot while playing all 90 minutes in the match.
The Burnaby, British Columbia native’s hat trick was the first in history of the Thorns and the second of the 2014 NWSL season. The Canada international’s three goals came in 46 minutes – 13 minutes faster than the hat trick by Breakers forward Jazmine Reeves, who completed the feat in 59 minutes against Portland in a 4-1 win May 28 at Harvard Stadium in Boston.
With the performance, Sinclair nearly doubled her offensive output for the year and brought her season total to seven goals. She is now one goal shy of matching her 2013 total.
Sinclair scored her first goal of the match against Boston in the 36th minute as she finished an extended sequence of intricate passes inside the Breakers’ penalty box with a quick shot past goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. (Goal #1 – Watch highlights)
In the 42nd minute, Sinclair notched her second to tie the score at 3-3 after midfielder Allie Long intercepted a pass in the attacking third before playing the ball to forward Alex Morgan, who laid the ball off to Sinclair to stroke home from 14 yards out. (Goal #2 – Watch highlights)
Sinclair then capped off her hat trick in the 46th minute, beating Naeher with her left foot from 12 yards after Morgan got onto the end of a cross from defender Stephanie Catley and drew several defenders to her before finding Sinclair for the shot. (Goal #3 – Watch highlights)
This marks the fourth time this season – along with midfielder Verónica Boquete (Week 10 and Week 14) and forward Alex Morgan (Week 11) – and sixth time overall a Portland Thorns FC player has been voted NWSL Player of the Week.
Portland Thorns FC will return to action Wednesday, July 23, at 7 p.m. ET against the Washington Spirit at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
