Liverpool Ladies cruise to victory over Sheffield FC
Liverpool Ladies cruised to a 6-0 victory over Sheffield FC Ladies in Group One North in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres Cup in Widnes on Wednesday evening.
Liverpool took the lead on nine minutes as Caroline Weir was played in by a superb Alex Greenwood pass and she stayed composed to slot the ball past the onrushing Danielle Gibbons and into the net.
Greenwood could have doubled the home sides lead on sixteen minutes as her freekick from 30 yards out beat Gibbons but she was denied as the ball struck the post before bouncing away to safety.
Weir was to double her goal tally on 29 minutes as she hit a powerful strike that was slipped out of Gibbons hands and into the net.
Sheffield FC were inches away from pulling a goal back on 32 minutes as Liverpool failed to clear a low Ellie Gilliatt cross the ball fell to Rhema Lord-Mears before her effort was well saved by Siobhan Chamberlain.
The home side were denied a third on 37 minutes as Bethany England weaved her way around the Sheffield defence before her effort was tipped over by the fine reactions of Gibbons atoning for her earlier error.
Liverpool started the second half on top and they added a third on 52 minutes as Greenwood fizzed in a low cross that was turned into her own net by Gilliatt as she stuck out a loose leg attempting to clear the ball away from the lurking Jess Clarke at the back post.
Ingle was then to grab a fourth goal for Scott Rogers on 65 minutes as she volleyed in a Weir cross at the back post after a short corner with Greenwood.
Liverpool did have their fifth however as Ali Johnson was played in on goal by England and she slotted into the net with ease.
Five was then to become six as England met a long pass and she fired the ball into the net from close range leaving Gibbons helpless in the final minute of the game.
