Match report: Spain begin Euro 2017 with a comfortable win

Spain begin Euro 2017 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Portugal on Wednesday evening.

It was the Spanish who started the better as Silvia Meseguer tried a long-range attempt on 5 minutes but saw her effort blocked by Portuguese defender García Rebelo.

Spain were playing some fantastic football in the early stages as Marta Torrejon saw her effort blocked. Jenni Hermoso then thought she had put the Spaniards into the lead as Mariona played her through but she fired over the crossbar.

Patricia Morais was then called into action in the Portugal goal as she was forced into making a smart save to push away a powerful Silvia Meseguer effort. However a minute later Spain took the lead as former Arsenal ladies winger Vicky Losada got on the end of a Andrea Pereira ball over the top of the Portugal defence.

Spain should have added to their lead on 28 minutes as Morais made a fine save to keep out Hermoso after she latched on to a Alexia Putellas cross. It would be fair to say Spain were in a dominate mood and went two nil ahead on 42 minutes as Amanda Sampedro finished with ease after she was played in by Mariona.

Portugal could have pulled a goal back on 55 minutes when Claudia Neto hit a rasping left foot shot from outside the box but the ball sailed just wide of the target. Silvia Meseguer was putting in a superb performance for the Spanish controlling the tempo of the game and she had the next opening on 69 minutes after yet another defence splitting Mariona pass but she could only fire her shot wide.

Losada was close to grabbing her second on 73 minutes as she was denied by a fantastic reaction save from Morais the keeper tipping her powerful drive away from the target. On 83 minutes the game could have been wrapped up as Mari Paz Vilas save her shot once again well saved by the Portugal keeper.
