Match report: Sweden ease past Russia

Sweden came out on top against Russia on Friday evening with a 2-0 victory.

Sweden came into the game off the back of a draw with Germany whilst Russia beat Italy on matchday one. It was Sweden who started the better as inside 6 minutes as Kosovare Asllani saw her dipping effort well saved by Tatyana Scherbak in the Russian goal.

Scherbak then was called into action on 10 minutes as she tipped a Nilla Fischer header onto the post as the Swedish centre back rose highest from a corner. Russias first opening came from Daria Makarenko as her long-range effort sailed just over the top.

Sweden then took the lead on 22 minutes through captain Lotta Schelin as she placed her header out of the reach of the despairing dive of Scherbak. Russia needed a win to progress into the knockout stages but they were nearly two down on 34 minutes as Asllani played in Caroline Seger but she curled her shot just wide of the goal.

Scherbak was putting in yet another superb performance and she was quick to react on 37 minutes as Seger crossed for Jessica Samuelsson before her volley was tipped away from goal. On the stroke of half time Russia came close to a leveller as Elena Morozova brought a fine reaction save out of Hedvig Lindahl in the Swedes goal.

Sweden started the second half the much better side and went two up after a poor Scherbak goal kick found its way to Stina Blackstenuis and her shot went in via a combination of post and Russian captain Anna Kozhikova on 51 minutes.

This gave Sweden the confidence to go on as Asllani went close a few minutes later as her powerful dipping effort was well saved by the Russian keeper pushing her effort onto the crossbar. Seger thought she had made it three on 70 minutes as she got on the end of a Fischer knockdown from a corner but saw her strike saved by the impressive teenager in the Russian goal.

The final chance of note came in the final minutes as Samuelsson got through on goal before cracking her drive off the post before the ball bounced away from safety.
