Match report: Switzerland knock Iceland out of Euro 2017

Iceland’s Euro 2017 adventure came to an end on Saturday after they lost 2-1 to Switzerland in Group C.

The game got underway with Switzerland and it was they who came close inside 8 minutes as Vanessa Bernauer rattled her shot just wide from outside the box.

Bernauer was involved in the next move for the Swiss as she was played in by Lia Walti but she was denied a shot by a last-ditch tackle by Dagný Brynjarsdóttir.

Gunnhildur Jónsdóttir then came close for Iceland as she got on the end of a corner but she lacked the finish heading wide of goal.

Iceland then went ahead on 33 minutes as Fanndís Fridriksdóttir poked home after Switzerland had failed to deal with a low ball into the box.

Switzerland then upped the tempo and should have levelled as Walti fired just wide two minutes later after she side stepped the Icelandic defence.

However the favourites did grab their equaliser on 43 minutes as captain Lara Dickenmann was played in by Cinzia Zehnder and she rattled her effort into the back of the Icelandic goal.

Switzerland started the second half with a new-found confidence and should have gone ahead as Walti let fly from range only to see her shot somehow tipped over the bar.

Vanessa Burki was next to test her luck for the Swiss but she dragged her shot wide of the target from eight yards out after a pullback from Dickenmann.

However they did turn the game around and went ahead on 52 minutes when Ramona Bachmann was played in and she slotted the ball into the net.

Bachmann could have had her second on 62 minutes as she latched on to a Dickenmann pass but she scooped her effort over the bar from close range.

Iceland couldn’t live with Switzerland’s pass in midfield and they nearly fell further behind as Walti as she whistled a low effort wide from outside the box.

Swiss keeper Gaelle Thalmann was then called into action late on as he was forced into a good save to keep out Iceland captain Sara Bjork Gunnarsdóttir’s effort from twenty-five yards out to seal a massive win for her side.
