Match report: Northern Ireland miss out on World Cup qualifier
Northern Ireland missed out on a World Cup qualifier with England after falling to a 6-0 defeat to Germany on Monday evening if Northern Ireland had bettered Scotland’s goal difference they would have set up the historical tie.
Germany took the lead inside five minutes as Lauren Perry made a fine save to deny Kristin Kogel the ball rebounding out to Klara Buhl and she made no mistake in tucking the ball into the net.
Germany could have gone two ahead on 13 minutes as Dina Orschmann turned in the Northern Ireland penalty area before her low strike was well blocked by the recovering Megan Reilly.
It was then the turn of Perry to come to the hosts aid as she made a good save at her front post to keep out Sarai Linder as she weaved her way around the defence before seeing her effort saved by the legs of the keeper.
Perry of Linfield Ladies has impressed in the tournament and she made another brilliant save to keep the Germans at bay as she tipped away Annalena Riekes header after a whipped in cross by Buhl, it was the goalkeeper again a minute later to make another good save as she held a powerful drive from Linder.
However Germany did make it two on 24 minutes when neat work from the favourites to win the tournament saw the ball fall for Buhl and she drilled home her second of the evening leaving Perry with no chance.
Two was become three as Germany ripped the Northern Ireland open as Northern Ireland failed to clear a cross the ball feel to Rieke and she bundled the ball into the net from close range despite the best efforts of Teresa Burns to clear.
Germany created the first chance of the second half as Buhl sprinted down the right before crossing to Tanja Pawollek but she fired wide of the target at the near post.
Perry then made yet another superb save as she kept out a stinging shot from Pawollek as she turned the Green shirts inside out.
The fourth did arrive shortly after as the impressive Kogel fired into the net from just outside the box on 59 minutes as the Northern Irish defence were tiring.
Four than became five on 61 minutes as Perry lunged forward to keep out Rieke but the ball fell to Caroline Siems and she fired into the net leaving the young keeper with no chance.
Perry was having the game of her life as she made a great save with her legs on 76 minutes as she stopped a flying Janina Minge shot flying into the bottom corner of the net after Emma McMaster flicked away a cross from the right.
It really was the Lauren Perry show for Northern Ireland as she made another save on 78 minutes as Siems has weaved her way into the box before her low shot was saved by the legs of the stopper.
Theresa Burns then made a last-ditch tackle in the 86th minute to stop Pawollek as she was about to shoot and surely score.
Germany did make it six a minute later as Gerhardt is played in by Kogel before firing low into the net despite the best efforts of McMaster to clear the danger away.
