Sarah Samir becomes first female referee to officiate a men’s league match in Egypt

Sarah Samir has become Egypt’s first female to referee in an official men’s football game.

On Sunday, Wadi Degla FC faced Tala’ea El Gaish SC in an Egyptian Football League’s third division match and Sarah Samir took to the pitch as the first female to officiate a men’s league game in Egypt.

Wadi Degla FC won the fixture 2-0, scoring a goal in each half.

There are a reported 42 female referees in Egypt and this is the first time a men’s match has been refereed by a woman.

Egyptian Woman Becomes First Female Football Referee

The reaction on social media was a positive one and people have called upon the Egyptian Football Association to assign more female referees to more games.

Sarah Samir made a statement to the television program ‘Sports Hour’, in which she said ‘she faced no difficulties in refereeing the game, despite some ‘shock’ by players and attendees before the whistle blew and the game commenced’.
