Seattle Reign FC (11-0-2, 35 pts) will try to extend its unbeaten streak to a league-record 14 games on Saturday, June 28, as they take on Sky Blue FC (3-6-6, 15 pts) at the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium. The match kicks off at 6 p.m. (PT).
Reign FC is coming off a 2-1 victory over the Western New York Flash at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y., scoring two goals in the final ten minutes to secure their fourth straight win, after Seattle conceded the game’s first goal for the fifth time in the past six games.
After the Flash opened the scoring in the 61st minute with a goal from midfielder Samantha Kerr, Seattle drew even in the 83rd minute after a free kick by Scottish international Kim Little from 35 yards out. Little’s ball was served into a crowded box and deflected off Flash midfielder Carli Lloyd before sailing past Western New York goalkeeper Lydia Williams for the goal. The assist was Little’s second, to go with her league-leading 11 goals.
Just seven minutes later, U.S. Women’s National Team forward Sydney Leroux scored her third goal of the season, knocking a shot over Williams and into the net off a chip pass into the box by midfielder Jessica Fishlock, to give Reign FC the lead and the win.
In her second consecutive start, goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer made three saves, and currently holds a 0.50 goals against average after two appearances.
Reign FC is in first place in the NWSL standings with 35 points, followed by FC Kansas City in second place with 27 points, and the Chicago Red Stars and Portland Thorns FC in third place with 20 points.
Sky Blue FC is coming off a 2-1 victory over Thorns FC on June 25. Midfielder Katy Freels leads the team with five goals, while defender Kelley O’Hara is second with three. Forward Monica Ocampo’s 38 shots taken leads the team. Forward Maya Hayes is the only player to appear in all 15 games, mostly as a substitute, while Freels has started a team-high 14 games.
Saturday’s match is the final of three regular season matches between Seattle and Sky Blue FC. Forward Nahomi “Naho” Kawasumi scored three goals in a pair of road games at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. as Reign FC defeated Sky Blue FC 2-0 on April 30, and 3-1 on June 1.
