Semi-finals – Rio 2016 Olympic Games Women’s Football tournament

And then there were four… After a thrilling Rio 2016 Olympic women’s football quarter-final stage we are left with just four teams still in the running to claim the Gold medal; Canada, Germany, Sweden and Brazil.

Sophie Schmidt scored the lone and winning goal for Canada against France to book their place in the semi-finals. Their opponents Germany also won their quarter-final by one goal as Melanie Behringer found the back of the net against China PR. Sweden defeated the reigning gold medallists and World Champions USA in a penalty shoot-out. The hosts Brazil had their quarter-final decided by a penalty shootout, beating Australia in sudden-death.

Both of the semi-final fixtures are a rematch from a Rio 2016 group stage game. Canada beat Germany 2-1 on 9 August, coming from behind thanks to a Tancredi brace. Brazil scored five against Sweden on 6 August and Schelin scored a consolation goal just before full-time.

FIFA has decided the refereeing teams who will lead the Semifinal matches today in Brazil. Both matches are replays of games in the final matchday of the group stage and the same could be said of the referees as they are the same from the group stage. Lucila Venegas has proved herself as one of FIFA’s most relied upon referees, and the Mexican takes charge of Brazil – Sweden, having led the 5-1 win for the hosts in the group stage. Ri Hyang Ok has showed again why FIFA designates her for some of the most important matches, as she did for the 2-2 in the group, she leads Germany – Canada.
