FC Kansas City Forward Shea Groom Voted NWSL Player of the Week
FC Kansas City forward Shea Groom was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week for Week 19 of the 2017 NWSL season.
Groom, 24, had two goals and an assist to lead FC Kansas City to a 4-1 victory over Sky Blue FC as the former back-to-back NWSL champions kept alive their slim playoff hopes.
The Liberty, Mo. native helped open the scoring in the 39th minute as she collected a flick from Sydney Leroux and raced toward goal before laying a pass across the face of the net for Lo’eau LaBonta to smash home. Groom then doubled the Blues’ advantage in the 44th minute when she was played in by a ball over the top from LaBonta before she picked a spot inside the far post and calmly slotted it past Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan for the eventual game-winning goal.
The Texas A&M product then made it 3-0 in the 64th minute with a well-timed run to get on the end of a centering effort from Desiree Scott. Groom had her initial shot stopped by Sheridan, but the rebound bounced off her knee and into the back of the net for the goal.
The game-winning goal was the second of the year for Groom, who has scored or assisted on the game-winning tally in three of the last four victories for FC Kansas City. She now has four goals and six assists on the year and is one of just nine players in the league with 10 points so far this season.
It is the second time Groom has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the seventh time an FC Kansas City player has won the award. She previously earned the accolade for her play in Week 13 of the 2015 season.
FC Kansas City will return to action against the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL Game of the Week on Lifetime on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m. ET at Children’s Mercy Victory Field in Kansas City, Mo.
