Shiels names his first Northern Ireland senior women’s squad
Kenny Shiels has named his first Northern Ireland women’s senior squad for the upcoming Euro 2021 qualifying games with Norway and Wales.
Shiels who took over from Alfie Wylie as manager earlier this year will see his new side take on Norway at Seaview on the Friday 30th August before a short trip to Wales on September 3rd.
Norway are the top seeds in Qualifying Group C, while the Welsh are second seeds. Northern Ireland, seeded fourth, will also face Belarus (third seeds) and Faroe Islands (fifth seeds) in the qualifiers.
Shiels has selected a mixture of youth and experience as well as calling up some new faces including Birmingham City’s summer signing Rebecca Holloway.
There is also space for 5 players in the squad who have yet to make their competitive debuts for the senior women’s team. They include Leicester City Women’s defender Natalie Johnson, who featured in two friendlies earlier this year, and Linfield Ladies midfielder Chloe McCarron, who last played for Northern Ireland in three friendlies back in 2015.
Under 19 Graduates Yasmin White and Claragh Connor will also be hoping to make their first senior bow as they have named in a strong panel.
The squad features no less than 10 players who are currently playing in the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership as the league continues to rise.
Nine group winners, plus three runners-up with the best records, will automatically qualify for the Women’s Euros in England in 2021. The other six runners-up will play off in October 2020 for the remaining three berths in the 16-team finals.
