Malawi women’s national football team scared South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the semi-finals of Cosafa Women’s Football Championship at the Rufaro stadium in Harare, on Thursday, with an early goal but lost the lead in a 1-5 defeat to be dumped of the tournament.
The Malawi squad was returning to international football after five years in the wilderness and were surprise package in the semi-finals.
Tabitha Chawinga scored for Malawi in the 17th minute after a rare piece of poor defending in the heart of the Banyana Banyana rearguard.
However, Banyana Banyana were on level terms four minutes after Banyana Banyana left back Nothando Vilkazi beat Malawian goalkeeper Alice Msiska. Banyana scored again three minutes later.
The Malawians’ task became that much harder in the 44th minute after Sungeni Msiska was sent from the field following a crunching tackle from behind that led to Banyana Banyana player being stretchered off the field.
Malawi conceded a penalty in the 89th minute and former African Player of the Year, Noko Matlou made no mistake to make the final score 5 – 1
