Chelsea Ladies announce the signings of Becky Spencer and Jade Bailey.

Chelsea Ladies have announced the signing of goalkeeper Becky Spencer from Birmingham City Ladies and midfielder Jade Bailey from Arsenal Ladies.

The reigning FA Women’s Super League 1 Champions, Chelsea Ladies continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2016 season.

24 year-old Becky Spencer signs for the top London club after three years with Birmingham City Ladies, during that time she played a key role in their runner-up finish in the FA Women’s Super League and progression to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final stage.

Spencer said on the club’s official website: ‘This is an exciting move in my career and I can’t wait to get going. Chelsea won the League and FA Cup last season to establish themselves as the team to beat and the opportunity to be part of that journey was too good to turn down.’

20 year-old midfielder Jade Bailey makes the move from Arsenal Ladies. The versatile midfielder is a member of the England Under-23 international set-up and previously helped England Under-19s reach the UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship in France in 2013.

Bailey said on ‘I want to develop my game and the opportunity at Chelsea gives me the chance to do exactly that. The set-up at Chelsea Ladies, the club, team and the staff are the ideal fit for me and I am looking forward to getting started.’

Chelsea Ladies manager Emma Hayes added: ‘Becky is here to compete with Hedvig Lindahl for the No.1 spot in this side. She has developed in to a top goalkeeper and arrives with Champions League experience and a desire to reach the next level in her career.

‘Jade is a player I have known about for some time and for someone who is 20 years of age she has fantastic experience, having started for Arsenal for the past two seasons.

‘I want homegrown, English players who want to grow with us. Jade will learn around some top players how to take her game forward. But she is up for the challenge and she will compete for a spot in midfield, as well as offer another option in central defence.’

Becky Spencer and Jade Bailey join England international Karen Carney who recently joined the squad on a two-year deal. The new season is set to kick off in March
