Swedish national team puts faces of 57 iconic women on the back of their new jersey
In light of FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in France this summer, the Swedish women’s national team premiered a unique home jersey from adidas in front of a historic crowd in Saturdays friendly fixture against Germany.
“We Create History”
With the tagline “We Create History” the new jersey is an homage to iconic women who, like the national team players, have paved the way for others and features images of 57 iconic Swedish women. The tagline is a manifestation of the fact that the Swedish women’s national team is the most successful senior national team in Swedish football history. Amongst the 57 women featured on the jersey are former U.S. national team coach Pia Sundhage, Swedish Crown Princess Victoria, Oscar winning actress Alicia Vikander and former Swedish national team captain Lotta Schelin.
“48 women and the publics nominees”
48 of the featured women were chosen by the national team players and presented to the public on International Women’s Day. Images of the 48 icons were turned into a collage and incorporated into jersey numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Number 8 was left empty and through the national team players social media accounts the public was encouraged to nominate iconic women that they wanted to see featured in number 8.
As a national team player, it is an honor for me to continue to build on the legacy that so many have paved the way for. Having role models to look up to and be inspired by has been crucial for me, both on and off the pitch. So as individual players and as a national team, we want to leverage our platform and influence to honour those who have paved the way and light up the road for those starting their journey today, says Elin Rubensson, Swedish national team player.
Saturdays game attracted a record-setting 25 882 fans to Friends Arena – Sweden’s national arena – an historic milestone for the women’s national team and Swedish football.
As a proud sponsor and official product-partner we have continued to increase our investments and engagement in one of the best national teams in the world. Our firm belief is that through sport, we have the power to change both lives and structures, a belief that that has guided us throughout this whole initiative, says Emma Stjernlöf, Marketing Director at adidas.
