Portland Thorns FC Midfielder Tobin Heath Voted NWSL Player of the Month
Portland Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month by the NWSL Media Association for the month of April of the 2016 NWSL season.
Heath, 27, was a driving force behind the Thorns’ undefeated start to the season with three assists in two games as Portland posted a 1-0-1 record during April.
The importance of the Basking Ridge, N.J. native’s impact was made all the more telling by the fact she assisted on all three of the Thorns goals in April – setting up fellow midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir for a game-tying goal before assisting on the game-winning goal by forward Lindsey Horan as Portland rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride on April 17.
The 2013 NWSL Championship Game MVP also set up Horan’s game-tying goal in the 78th minute to help Portland fight back to earn a 1-1 draw against FC Kansas City on April 23.
It is the first time Heath has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Month. She is the first Thorns player to win the award since forward and Canada international Christine Sinclair claimed the honor in April 2013 – the first month of the NWSL’s inaugural season.
Portland Thorns FC will return to action Saturday, May 7 at 7 p.m. ET against the Washington Spirit at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
