Today UEFA have announced the launch of the Best Women’s Player in Europe Award to accompany the men’s prize introduced two years ago.

The first winner of the inaugural award will be announced on 5 September 2013.

The announcement was made during a press conference ahead of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 tournament. UEFA Executive Committee member and chairwoman of the UEFA Women’s Football Committee, Karen Espelund said “This is a new milestone…. it proves UEFA are pushing all parts of women’s football.

Players will be judged by their performances during the 2012/13 campaign in all competitions, both domestic and international for the inaugural award.

Nominees will be drawn from a short-list provided by coaches of all UEFA Euro 2013 final tournament contenders and of the eight 2012/13 Women’s Champions League quarter-finalists. These nominees will be announced at the same time as the mens short-list on 6 August.

The voting jury will be composed of 18 journalists, each committed to women’s football.

This Euro will be very important in the choice of the players… I suppose that, so far, those of Wolfsburg (Kessler, Goessling, Wensing mainly), Lyon (Schelin, Abily, Nécib – even if all of three didn’t have a good C1 Final), Potsdam (Ogimi, Goransson), Tyresö (Marta, Boquete), Arsenal (Little, Houghton) are ahead. Neither Marta nor Ogimi will play the Euro, so they can’t have more points… Let’s add players as Marozsan, if Germany wins the title…

It’s very open at the moment, but as the Euro goes along, it would be tighter and tighter…
