Vietnam women’s national team’s Rio 2016 Olympic dream continues.

Vietnam women’s national football team has secured the remaining berth in the final round of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games following a 2-0 victory over Thailand yesterday.

The Rio 2016 Asian Qualifiers Round 2 – AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2015 concluded yesterday which saw Vietnam top the standings on 9pts ahead of Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Myanmar and Jordan.

It was a thrilling final day of second round qualifying action as three nations were still in with a chance to progress to the final round.

The tournament’s top goalscorer, Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet scored a goal in each half for Vietnam to beat Thailand. Despite the win, Vietnam had to wait for the result in the remaining match of the day as a win for Chinese Taipei against the hosts Myanmar would have meant they would leapfrog Vietnam to top the table. However, Chinese Taipei were held to a goalless draw at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium and Vietnam advanced to the next round of Olympic qualifiers.

Vietnam will now join the reigning 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup champions Japan as well as Australia, Korea DPR, China PR and Korea Republic in the final round of AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying, with the top two teams going on to represent Asia in the women’s football tournament of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

It’s a great achievement already, now they have extremely tough competition ahead. I wish them all the best in the contest, they just need to give it their best, enjoy the experience and anything can happen in football…
