Western New York Flash midfielder Carli Lloyd has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 12 of the 2014 NWSL season.
Lloyd, 31, scored two goals to spark the Flash to a 2-1 victory Friday over the Boston Breakers at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. This marks the second time the U.S. international has been named the NWSL Player of the Week.
Lloyd joins Sydney Leroux (3), Abby Wambach (2), Karina LeBlanc (2) and Lianne Sanderson (2) as the only players to have won the award on multiple occasions.
The Delran Township, N.J. native now has six goals on the season – tied for the fifth most in the league with FC Kansas City midfielder and fellow U.S. international Lauren Holiday.
Lloyd netted her first goal of the game against the Breakers in the 59th minute to give Western New York a 1-0 lead when she rose to deliver a powerful header off a long restart played into the box by defender Brittany Taylor.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the 83rd minute, Lloyd provided the game-winning goal after running onto a pass from midfielder Vicky Losada and lofting the ball over Boston goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to power the Flash to their second win in three games.
This marks the third time this season and sixth-time overall that a Western New York Flash player has been voted NWSL Player of the Week – with midfielder Vicky Losada earning the award in Week 1 and forward Samantha Kerr taking the accolade in Week 9 of this season. Lloyd and forward Abby Wambach (twice) both were named NWSL Player of the Week in 2013.
The Western New York Flash will return to action Wednesday, July 2 at 7 p.m. ET against Seattle Reign FC at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.
