Women’s Knock Out 2014/2015.
As the BOV Women’s League will not resume before April, the attention of the women’s football followers will turn on the quarter finals of the domestic cup which will be played next Tuesday. The first round’s qualified teams, Swieqi United – Raiders (Luxol) – Sliema Wanderers, will be joined by the rest of the teams playing in the Championship Pool, Birkirkara – Mgarr United – Hibernians – Kirkop United – Pembroke Athleta.
Without any doubts, the most awaited match will be between Birkirkara and Mgarr which will enrich their rivalry (in terms of sport language), which has been formed this season especially after Mgarr’s win over Birkirkara in the 1st round of the Championship Pool which cost Birkirkara the 1st place. The leaders Hibernians will be facing the new-entry of this season, Swieqi United in a match which even though it looks as an easy fixture, the latter cannot be underestimated as they are performing very well in the second part of the season, winning all the 5 fixtures they’ve played till now. Kirkop against Raiders (Luxol) is another thrilling fixture as both teams will be trying to enjoy a long cup run with an eye on the prize. In our last match, the other new-entry squad, Sliema will be facing Pembroke. Sliema will be trying to cause an upset against the Section A side which has not won a single point yet in the Championship Pool, sliding down to the last place after their 3-1 loss against Kirkop.
Sports journalist from Malta with a great passion towards women’s football. My interest towards women’s football commenced during the 2007 FIFA World Cup and from then on I started to catch up with all international tournaments that used to be broadcasted. My involvement in local women’s football started few years ago by attending all national team’s matches and sometimes used to attend some of the domestic league’s matches. I hope that my articles with WSU help our local league to build an important reputation among other nations and expose our girls in this movement.
